My philosophical divergence from traditional Jedi teachings

Master Yoda, let's talk about this "Do or do not. There is no try."

Despite being a great motivational tool, your mantra falls short as an overall philosophy. I understand what you're going for is a more eloquent (in your own grammatically unique way) phrasing of "Failure is not an option." The problem is you offer the "do not" route as an option. "Do not" holds a lot of appeal. Do not underestimate the power of "do not."

Seriously, if "do not" could really yield you any sort of wisdom or power, you should be snatching a pebble from my hand. Fear, hatred, anger, aggression...apathy is a much quicker route to the Dark Side. Trust me.

Speaking of which the Emperor keeps pushing for Luke, like his father before him, to let his passion fuel him. And Obi Wan claims that only Sith deal in absolutes. You guys are sending out a lot of mixed messages here. No wonder you have more kids going bad than the 119th Street Boys & Girls Club.

Lighten up you should.

Try not to anger Master Yoda, for he is old and cranky.

And don't ever, ever, make him drop his cane!

I must disagree that "Do or do not. There is no try." = "Failure is not an Option."

Failure is always an option, even if you do "do." To me, the "do" is committing to take action. "Try" is intending to take action. It's a matter of will. There's a different mindset for trying something than for doing something. Trying implies a bunch of metacognition where doing is more of a being in the moment kind of thing and not letting fears, worries or other white noise interfering.

...Or am I over-thinking this?

But I do agree with the "not do" stuff you said.

What would have been better is if Mace Windu had been the Jedi Master that survived. The sentiment may have been phrased more like, "Quit your punk-ass whining and levitate the motherfucking spaceship, bitch!" Which is something we can all get behind.

We all wanted Luke to be fueled by his passions until we discovered that he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, and then he was just another whiner who had to clean up the 'droids instead of go into town to get some more power converters.

Hey, sometimes "do not" is the right option. For example, what if you're presented with the unique opportunity to sing karoake after you've had more than too many cocktails? Or if a herp infested tool wants to sleep with you?

I'd go with do not any day of the week.
